Brief History of the Webber Family in Pennsylvania

The family presence in the USA began in the late 1800's when Samuel Evans, his wife Gwen, and their two young daughters - Gwen (actually Gwenhwyfar) and Ceridwen - immigrated to northeastern Pennsylvania from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.  They settled in the Scranton area, specifically in the borough of Taylor, southwest of the city.

In the early 1900's the older daughter, Gwen, married Edward Webber, who had come to the US from South Wales by himself as an adult.  He and Gwen had three children - Morgan, Glyn, and Bessie, all of whom who were born in Plymouth, just southwest of Wilkes-Barre. At some point they moved up to Taylor where the Evans were, settling at 131 E. Grove Street in Taylor. Morgan, Glyn, and Bessie all graduated from Taylor High School.

Each of the Webber children married and began their own families.  When Edward died in 1941, Glyn and his wife Jen moved in with Gwen who by that time was being called Nana by her grandchildren.  Nana eventually left the house in Taylor and lived with Bessie and her family, first in Scranton and then in Chinchilla northwest of the city, until Bessie's death in late 1967.  Morgan and his family lived at 27 Throop Street in Scranton for a time. They moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1937. After they were married, Glyn and Jen lived with Morgan's family for a brief time in Scanton, then lived in the Grove Street house until they moved to Joliet, Illinois, in the 1950's.  That was the end of the Webber presence in Taylor.  In early 1968 Nana moved to Joliet and lived with Glyn & Jen until her death at age 90 in September 1971.
